The
Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project (UKHP) will harness the hydropower potential
of the rivers in the Nuwara Eliya District to provide electricity to the
people of Sri Lanka. The CEB is committed to undertaking the project in
a manner that cares for the natural and man made environment and contributes
to the sustainable development of the region. It recognises that it must
be responsive to the changing environmental requirements of the society
it serves, and that the long term viability of the project is dependent
on improving the management of environmental issues within the catchment.
As part of the commitment to effective environmental management the UKHP
will undertake the following:
- We will meet, and where possible exceed,
the requirements of all applicable legislation and regulations;
- We will by quantifiable environmental targets,
endeavour to cause the minimum impact on the environment;
- We will, in all our operations, economize
on natural resources and energy;
- We will attach key importance to human health
and safety;
- We will improve the environmental awareness
of all project staff by training them and motivating them to take responsibility
for the environmental consequences of their activities;
- We will place the same high environmental
demand on our suppliers, contractors and business partners as we place
on our own operations; and
- We will communicate with all our stakeholders
to inform them of environmental issues relating to the project.
