The Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project (UKHP) has been designed to generate 150 MW of power for the partial fulfillment of the growing demand for Electrical Energy in the country. Cheap power is required for the industrial development, which to a large measure determines the economic growth in the country, as well as for the domestic use to elevate the standard of living of the people. However, the past experiences show that such projects are likely to cause environmental damage unless proper environmental protection strategies are adopted.
